The importance of journalism education accreditation must not be understated. An accredited journalism and mass communications program shows that the program met the standards established by journalists and the journalism industry. Additionally, it reassures students of the integrity of their education; that it is of quality and is significant to their employment in journalism and related professions.
The Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications (ACEJMC) is the premier body responsible for accreditation of journalism and mass communications programs. Recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), the ACEJMC's duties include the review and evaluation of journalism-related programs. Qualified programs are granted accredited status, providing the public with confidence in its reliability.
Along with the ACEJMC, six regional accrediting bodies evaluate journalism programs in the U.S.:
- Middle State Association of Colleges and Schools
- Western Association of Schools and Colleges
- North Central Association of Colleges and Schools
- New England Association of Schools and Colleges
- Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges
